2 years, 10 months ago Suzie shines at the ladies World Championships #50

HAMPSHIRE golden girl Suzie Opacic beat world No 8 Jan Hughes and was two shots from a famous victory over world No 4 Christine Sharpe at the Ladies’ World Championships in Cambridge.
The 18-year-old saw off Maureen Logan (Newcastle) 3-0 in the first group-stage match before losing 2-1 on the pink to Sharpe (Chelmsford).
Opacic, backed by David Andrews Wed Design, recorded breaks of 30 and 38 in a 3-0 win against WLBSA Press Officer Hughes (St Neots).
“I was pleased to get a frame off her (Sharpe),” said Opacic.
“I was feeling more confident for the next match against Martina Lumsden, who I've beaten before, but again lost the decider on the pink.”
After the 2-1 defeat by Lumsden (Eastbourne), Opacic lost 3-0 to World Ladies’ Billiards Champion Chitra Magimairaj (India), and Tina Owen-Sevilton (Somerset).
Reports suggest that Opacic, from Brambridge, has impressed enough on her first season on the ladies’ circuit to be offered a wildcard to the Masters tournament in September.
Dudley-based Reanne Evans, 21, won the world title for the third year running.

2 years, 10 months ago Suzie is snookered by club's ban on women players #51

A SNOOKER world champion has been barred from playing in a social club's league match - because she is a woman.

Despite holding the title of Ladies' World Junior Champion and racking up a host of titles in the past three months, Suzie Opacic has been told she will not be welcome with her Southampton-based Pot Black social club team when they visit Netley Central.

Because of club rules, women are banned from Netley Central which means Suzie's team will have to do without her for the Division Two Southampton Social Club league clash in February.

No women' Out of the 15 clubs in the division, Netley is the only one which enforces a no women rule. It is the first time Suzie has encountered the ban since she began playing in September.

Suzie, 18, of Brambridge near Colden Common, said: \"I'm really disappointed that I won't be able to play. They should respect me as a player. At the end of the day I have to respect their rules even if I don't agree with them. Hopefully they'll rethink their rules in the future.\"

A spokesman for Netley Central confirmed that Suzie would not be able to play.

2 years, 9 months ago Michaela Tabb #77

Michaela Tabb, a champion pool player, will officiate at snooker’s World Championship on Saturday.

THE change was overdue. While snooker’s players had become younger and more flamboyant, the referees remained middle-aged, dowdy and male. For a sport eager to present a youthful image, something had to be done.

The solution, or at least a part of it, was Michaela Tabb. Already well known on the pool circuit as both player and referee, the Dunfermline woman was as far removed as possible from the snooker stereotype. She was not middle-aged, she was far from dowdy and she was certainly not male.

The decision was made by Jim McKenzie, then the chief executive of World Snooker, now the holder of the equivalent post at Edinburgh Rugby. Dispensing with the customary five- year apprenticeship, McKenzie decreed that Tabb and three others should be fast-tracked on to the professional refereeing circuit.

That was two years ago. Now, the rapid rise is almost complete, and on Saturday Tabb will become the first woman to referee at the world championship in Sheffield, when she takes charge of the first-round match between Mark King and Drew Henry.

2 years, 6 months ago Sexy Michaela smiles for you #141

The stunning Michaela Tabb, however, will again be chalking up for the national team she's represented with distinction for 11 years.

Michaela is, of course, the beautiful brunette who's got pool fans the world over tuning in as she officiates at the TV stages of various world eightball and nineball pool events.

She's a regular referee at the Mosconi Cup and the World Nineball Championships, which both have worldwide audiences – and she's also a mean wielder of the cue herself, with countless titles as a key member of the all-conquering Scottish Ladies Team as well as the winner of the 1997 UK Singles title and the 1998 European Ladies Championships in her own right.

And, bizarrely, her adventures in the world of the green baize occurred by a happy accident.

I first got involved in the game at the start of the Nineties when I used to go to a local pub where everyone else played pool. So I had a choice of either joining in or sitting on my own watching – so I picked up a cue and took my chances! Fortunately, there was a Scottish Ladies international who also used the pub and I used to play with her so my game started to rapidly improve. A year later I was invited to trial for the Scottish Ladies Team and I made my debut in 1992. I've more or less been a member of the team ever since and, although I don't have the potting game that a lot of the girls have, my tactical game is very sound and I can hold my own against most players. I pride myself on the fact that I am a tough competitor and won’t lie down in any game.

She will never be able to get her chin down any closer on her cue with distractions like that!!

She's a beautiful young woman and should she decide to try her hand at the WPBA, I don't think she's going to have a problem finding a few sponsors. Her good looks make her very marketable. I know one male pro that lost a cue sponsorship to a lesser female player because ultimately it boiled down to who would look better sprawled out on a pool table holding that company's cue for a photo shoot... I don't think anyone could go wrong using her in a photo shoot like that

2 years, 4 months ago So, come on boys....and give those balls a SQUEEZE #159

She continues: "Men are notoriously bad at discussing health matters and going to see their doctor. But, with Gemma's help, we hope that men will be encouraged to give their balls a squeeze and check for the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer. It could just save their lives."

Gemma said: "When I found out that more than 10,000 men die from prostate cancer every year, and that testicular cancer can effect boys as young as 15, I was genuinely shocked. I'm so pleased I can help to play a part in Rileys "give your balls a squeeze" campaign which supports the Everyman cancer charity. It's a really fun way to make a serious point and get men to start recognising the early signs of prostate and testicular cancer. I hope the campaign is a huge success."

Rileys will be selling squeezy ball keyrings in clubs in aid of the charity, and is also planning a series of fundraising events over the next year to collect as much cash as possible to support Everyman - Europe's first and only centre dedicated to male cancer research.

So, come on boys, follow Gemma's example and give those balls a SQUEEZE!

I first started to play pool in 8-ball leagues.

I was taught by many good players in Toronto especially Paul Thornley

I became interested in pool when I realized that I was good at it.

Love of the game and the desire to be the best is what drives me to keep playing pool

I have joined several leagues, tournaments, or tours in the past.

Some memorable place achievements are Ontario Champion, 2000; Ontario Women’s Pool Tour champion, 2003; several individual tournament wins

The billiard club or room that I play out is Shooters, Toronto

The best kept secret to my success in 9-ball is staying

1 year, 7 months ago She’s a great player and to do it against th #354

“She’s a great player and to do it against the world champion, you can’t wish for anything better.

“Against players like Reanne you can’t afford to take too many on in a best-of-five. You just have to dig deep and give it your best, and I did.”
Catalano survived a scare in the last 16 to beat former England international Marianne Williams 3-2. She saw off Jenny Poulter, from Maidstone, 3-1 with breaks of 31, 32 and 36 and knocked in a 60 in a 3-2 semi-final victory over world number three June Banks.
